Following information received from the Senior Superintendent of Police, Nuwara Eliya, regarding a 23-year-old female student from the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, who had fallen from World’s End in Horton Plains area, troops of the Sri Lanka Army promptly launched a rescue operation on 19 March 2026.
Troops under the 114 Infantry Brigade deployed a rescue team comprising personnel from the 3rd (V) Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and the 3rd Commando Regiment.
The team reached the site within 45 minutes. The route to the location was extremely challenging, consisting of narrow and rugged terrain. The rescue team trekked approximately 5 kilometres on foot from the entrance of World’s End to the viewing point. Thereafter, army personnel descended more than 100 feet down a steep precipice using ropes to locate and reach the injured student.
Upon successfully rescuing her, troops carried the casualty on a stretcher for approximately 5 kilometres back to the entrance. She was subsequently handed over to the 1990 Emergency Ambulance Service and admitted to Nuwara Eliya Hospital for further treatment.
