The Commander of the Army Commends Notable Service of Retiring Major General

Major General A.M.C.P. Wijayaratne RWP RSP nps psc, the Director General, Directorate of Research Concept and Doctrine, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 30 December 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army following a distinguished military career spanning over 35 years.

Brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General A.M.C.P. Wijayaratne RWP RSP nps psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake PMA 02 on 07 September 1990. Upon the successful completion of his military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA), Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Light Infantry on 13 March 1991.

After being steadily elevated through subsequent ranks during his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 27 December 2024. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 02 January 2026 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was holding the appointment of Director General, Directorate of Research Concept and Doctrine, Army Headquarters.

Throughout his illustrious military career, the Senior Officer held numerous key appointments. He served as the Platoon Commander of 1st Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Officer Commanding of the 1st Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Adjutant of the 1st Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Officer Commanding of the 1st Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Staff Officer 2 (Additional) of Directorate of Media at Army Headquarters, Officer Commanding of the 1st Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Overlooking Second-in-Command of the 1st Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Officer Commanding of the 1st Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Staff Officer 2 (Training and Support) of Army Command and Staff College in Sri Lanka, Officer Commanding of Sri Lanka Battalion at United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Second-in-Command of the 15th Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Commanding Officer of the 12th Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Deputy Chief of Military Personnel Officer in U – 1 at United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti, Staff Officer 1 (Administration) at Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Research Coordinator at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

He also served as the Colonel (General Staff) at Security Force Headquarters (East), Colonel (General Staff) of General Staff Branch at Army Headquarters, Officiating Commander of 622 Infantry Brigade, Senior Staff Officer at the Office of the Chief of National Intelligence at the Ministry of Defence, Commander of 211 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier (Coordinating) Tri Services land (North and East) of Directorate of Real Estate and Quartering at Army Headquarters, General Officer Commanding of 54 Infantry Division and Director General of Directorate of Research Concept and Doctrine at Army Headquarters.

In recognition of his dedicated and exemplary service, he was awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama and Rana Sura Padakkama (awarded 3 times).

The Senior Officer successfully completed several professional military courses. These included the Battalion Support Weapons Refresher Course, Methods of Instruction Course and Defence Services Command and Staff Course.

He also attended a number of overseas courses. These included the Young Officers Course in India, Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course in India, Mid-Career Course in Pakistan and Basic Parachute Course in India.

In addition to his military qualifications, the Senior Officer obtained a Master of Defence Studies at the University of Kelaniya and Masters of Arts in Security Studies (Civil-Military Relations) at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California, the United States of America.
