Military Intelligence Foils Smuggling and Illegal Wildlife Trade in Coordinated Raids

Based on information received by the Military Intelligence Unit, two separate raids were conducted on 17 December 2025 in coordination with law enforcement agencies, leading to significant seizures and arrests.

In Mannar, a joint operation with the Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit resulted in the inspection of a suspicious lorry parked near the Husaniya Jumma Mosque in the Tharapuram area. The raid led to the seizure of illegally imported cigarettes valued at approximately Rs. 23.9 million (189,000 cigarettes), along with a stock of insecticides. The lorry driver, a resident of the Palaviya area, was arrested, and further investigations are being carried out by the Mannar Police Station.

On the same day, another operation was conducted in the Palapathwala area of Matale in collaboration with the Dambulla Police Special Task Force. During this raid, a suspect was arrested near a fuel station while attempting to sell two Gajamuthu valued at Rs. 300 million. Further investigations have been handed over to the Office of the Assistant Director, Kurunegala Wildlife Zone.
