Major General W.M.P.M Wijesooriya RWP RSP ndu, Commander, 1 Corps and Colonel Commandant of the Military Intelligence Corps, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 01 August 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after completing a distinguished military career spanning over 35 years.
Brief Profile of the Retiring Senior Officer:
Major General W.M.P.M Wijesooriya RWP RSP ndu enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 14 July 1990 to the Intake 34. Upon successful completion of military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Special Forces Regiment on 06 June 1992. He was steadily elevated to the substantive ranks and finally promoted to the rank of Major General on 10 October 2023.
The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 06 August 2025 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointments of Commander, 1 Corps and Colonel Commandant, Military Intelligence Corps.
During his extensive military career, he served as Group Commander of the 2nd Regiment Special Forces, Officer Commanding of the ‘E’ Squadron - 2nd Regiment Special Forces, Staff Officer 3 at the Special Forces Training School, Officer Commanding of the ‘M’ Squadron - 3rd Regiment Special Forces, Operation and Training Officer of the 3rd Regiment Special Forces, Acting Second-in-Command of the 2nd Regiment Special Forces, Brigade Major at the Headquarters - Special Forces Brigade, Second-in-Command of the 3rd Regiment Special Forces, Chief Instructor of the Special Forces Training School, Acting Commanding Officer of the 2nd Regiment Special Forces, and Commanding Officer of the 3rd Regiment Special Forces. He further held key staff appointments such as Senior Staff Officer at the Headquarters - 111 Infantry Brigade, Staff Officer 1 (Administration) at the Regimental Centre Special Forces, Colonel (Commander’s Secretariat) of the Commander’s Secretariat at Army Headquarters, Commander of the 642 Infantry Brigade, Director (Operations) of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Deputy General Officer Commanding of the 53 Infantry Division, Brigadier (General Staff) of the Security Force Headquarters – Mullaitivu, Director and later Director General of the Directorate of Movement at Army Headquarters, General Officer Commanding of the 59 Infantry Division, General Officer Commanding of the 57 Infantry Division, Commander of the 1 Corps, and Colonel Commandant of the Military Intelligence Corps.
In recognition of his committed and valiant service to the Sri Lanka Army, he was awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama and the Rana Sura Padakkama in four occasions. In terms of military training, he completed several local military training courses, including the Special Forces Basic Course, Basic Marksmanship Course, and Balance Style Course. His international training includes the Commando Course in India, Mortar Officers’ Course in India, Young Officers’ Course in India, Parachute Basic Course in India, Junior Command Course in India, Humanitarian Relief Operations in Disasters Course in Turkey, and the National Security and War Course in Pakistan.
Academically, he holds an Executive Diploma in Disaster Analysis Management from the Institute of Human Resource Advancement at the University of Colombo, a Master of Science in Service Management from the University of Colombo and a Master of Science in National Security Management and War Studies from the National Defence University in Pakistan.
