Islandwide Coastal Cleaning Campaign by the Sri Lanka Army

The Sri Lanka Army, in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka Task Force, launched an islandwide coastal cleaning campaign under the theme “A Cleaner Environment with the Army - A Clean Coastline for the Nation” on 29 July 2025. Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, graced the inauguration of the campaign at the Kaakkadhuwa Island coastal stretch in Mattakkuliya.

This initiative was supported by the sister services, the Ministry of Environment, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), government and private institutions, voluntary and civil organisations, environmental groups, as well as both local and international environmental enthusiasts.

The islandwide cleaning programme was conducted along the island’s coastal belt, coordinated through five Security Force Headquarters. Troops of Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna were tasked with cleaning the stretch of coastline from Vellamkulam to Chundikulam. Meanwhile, troops of Security Force Headquarters - Wanni were responsible for the areas from Mariddukoddai to Vellamkulam and from Chundikulam to Kokkilai. Troops of Security Force Headquarters - East covered the stretch from Kokkilai to Kumana, and troops of Security Force Headquarters - Central cleaned the section from Kumana to Kudawella. In addition, troops of Security Force Headquarters - West were assigned to clean the area from Kudawella to Mariddukoddai.
