In keeping with a revered annual tradition, the Sri Lanka Army, for the 12th consecutive year, donated six tons of dried coconuts (copra) to support the illuminations of the historic Esala Perahera held by the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) in Kandy on 17 July 2025.
Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, presided over the ceremonial handover as the Chief Guest. The initiative, spearheaded primarily by the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, highlights the Army’s commitment to preserving Sri Lanka’s rich religious and cultural heritage.
Upon his arrival at the sacred premises, the Army Chief was warmly welcomed by Major General K.A.W.N.H. Bandaranayake USP, Commander Security Force (Central) and Colonel of the Regiment, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment. The Commander later met with Mr. Anura Bandara, Administrative Secretary of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, before engaging in religious observances.
In a solemn procession, troops carrying Buddhist flags and flower trays respectfully delivered the copra stock to the temple. The ceremonial handover was held in the inner chamber of the Maligawa, symbolising the Army’s continued spiritual contribution to the annual Esala Perahera festivities.
Senior Officers, Officers, and Other Ranks of the Army were present at the event, reflecting the collective dedication of the military in upholding national traditions.
