Security Forces (East) Conduct Joint Operation to Prevent Crop Damage by Wild Elephants

In a proactive effort to mitigate the growing human–elephant conflict, the Security Forces (East), in collaboration with the 7th Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery (7 SLA), 12th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch (12 GW), 3 (V) Battalion of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (3 (V) VIR), the Department of Wildlife Conservation and Mahaweli Authority officers, conducted a coordinated operation on 19 June 2025 to drive 26 wild elephants from Mivithapura to Nuwaragala.

The operation, covering the vulnerable agricultural zones of Mivithapura, Madagampitiya, Nawagaha Ela, and Nuwaragala, aimed to prevent extensive crop damage, particularly to paddy fields, and to ensure the safety of local farming communities.

The initiative led by Major General P. R. Pathiravithana USAWC psc, Commander, Security Forces (East) and Brigadier W. S. R. Kumara USP ISC, Project Officer, reflects the Army’s commitment to community protection and environmental balance.
