Major General W.W.M.P.W.W.B.R Palamakumbura RWP RSP was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, along with his family members on 05 June 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after completing a distinguished career spanning 34 years.
Below is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:
Major General W.W.M.P.W.W.B.R Palamakumbura RWP RSP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet into the Intake PMA 2 on 07 September 1990. Upon successful completion of military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Artillery on 13 March 1991. He was steadily elevated to subsequent ranks during his military service and was promoted to the rank of Major General on 27 December 2024. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 14 June 2025, upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was holding the appointment of General Officer Commanding of the 21 Infantry Division.
Major General W.W.M.P.W.W.B.R Palamakumbura RWP RSP held a range of key appointments throughout his distinguished career. He served as the Troop Commander of the 4th Field Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery and the 7th Light Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Battery Captain in the 27th Battery of the 8th Medium Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Intelligence Officer of the 8th Medium Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Battery Captain of the 26th and 27th Batteries of the 8th Medium Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Battery Commander of the 30th Battery of the 10th Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Adjutant of the 10th Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Battery Commander of the 32nd and 103rd Batteries of the 10th Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Staff Officer II at the School of Artillery, Battery Commander at the Headquarters Battery of the 4th Field Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, Second-in-Command of the 4th Field Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, and General Staff Officer I (Operations) at Headquarters 22 Infantry Division and Headquarters 21 Infantry Division.
He also served as the Commanding Officer of the 7th Light Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery, General Staff Officer I (Coordinating) at Security Force Headquarters (Central), General Staff Officer I (Operations) at Headquarters 51 Infantry Division, Security and Administration Officer at Suhurupaya, Colonel (General Staff) at Headquarters 54 Infantry Division and 22 Infantry Division, Commander of the 593 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier (General Staff) at Security Force Headquarters (Mullaitivu), Director, Directorate of Management and Maintenance at Army Base Hospital (Kandy), Director General, Directorate of Management and Maintenance at Army Base Hospital (Kandy), and the General Officer Commanding of the 21 Infantry Division.
The Senior Officer has been awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama and the Rana Sura Padakkama in recognition of his dedicated service rendered during his tenure in the Sri Lanka Army.
He has completed numerous local and foreign military courses throughout his career. These include the Young Officers’ Preparatory Course, Platoon Commanders’ Tactics Course (Phase II), Platoon Commanders’ Course (Phase III), Basic Intelligence & Security Course, Unit Accounts Officers’ Course, Basic Parachute Training Course, Junior Staff Course, and the Artillery Officers’ Advanced Gunnery Course. He also followed the Artillery Young Officers’ (Field) Course in India, Gunnery Instructor Course in China, Advanced Gunnery Course in India, Artillery Captains Career Course in the United States of America, Mainstreaming Gender into Community-Based Disaster Risk Management Training Course in Kenya, and the Air Defence Forces Battalion Commanders’ Course in China.
