Sri Lanka Army Leads Initiative to Make Sri Pada Sacred Grounds a Waste-Free Zone

In line with the Sri Pada pilgrimage season scheduled to commence on 04 December 2025, a series of programmes has been arranged, with the guidance of Commander of the Army, under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative to maintain the Sri Pada sacred area as a zone free of polythene and plastics.

This initiative is being implemented in two phases. The inaugural programme began on 25 November 2025 in the Sri Pada Udamaluwa surrounding area, with the participation of 50 members of the Sri Lanka Army.

Under this initiative, arrangements have been made to obtain the support of government and non-government organisations as well as the civil community, with the aim of ensuring a plastic-free environment for pilgrims during the upcoming Sri Pada season and restoring the surroundings prior to the commencement of the pilgrimage.

The second phase of the programme is scheduled to be held on 29 November 2025, covering the areas along the access roads to the Sri Pada sacred grounds.
