Sri Lanka Army Continues Rescue and Relief Operations for People Affected by the Emergency Disaster Situation

The Sri Lanka Army continues its efforts to rescue and relocate people affected by the adverse weather condition impacting the island.

From 25 to 29 November 2025, the Sri Lanka Army carried out a series of operations including clearing obstructed roads, repairing damaged tank bunds, restoring essential infrastructure and conducting multiple rescue missions.

In addition, over 24,000 troops have been deployed for ongoing rescue operations and more than 7,380 displaced individuals, including three foreigners, have been rescued so far. Special rescue missions are currently underway in Keppetipola and Matale areas following landslides.

Commando Regiment troops have also been engaged in reconnaissance missions in the Ramboda and Gampola areas using Air Force helicopters, evacuating displaced persons and transporting them from Diyatalawa to Nuwara Eliya. Another Commando team is conducting foot patrols from Keppetipola to Nuwara Eliya to identify affected areas.

Additionally, Army troops have evacuated over 2,000 individuals from Trincomalee, Mavil Aru, Neelapuram and Verugal Aru following the emergency situation caused in the Mavil Aru tank. The troops are also providing meals to those affected.

A total of 14 tank bunds have been restored by Army personnel by strengthening them with sandbags. Furthermore, eight cookhouses are currently operating in Badulla, Pallekelle, Digana, Maradana, Kelanimulla and Mattakkuliya, providing food and essential support. Over 50,500 meal packets have been distributed to affected individuals by the Sri Lanka Army.

The Sri Lanka Army is also maintaining 919 emergency safety centres across all districts of the country. These centres are providing relief services to 122,822 individuals.
