Coinciding with Ozone Layer Protection Day, the Sri Lanka Army, in line with the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, organised a series of programmes on 16 September 2025. Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, planted a white sandalwood tree near the “Thuru Mithuru Nawa Ratak” name board, in front of Army Headquarters, symbolising the planting of 5,000 trees across Army establishments islandwide on 16 September 2025.
A one-hour lecture was held in all Army establishments on the Montreal Protocol, the ozone layer, the causes of its depletion and its significance for human survival. Army personnel were educated on the importance of protecting the ozone layer and the measures that can be taken to achieve this. These lectures aimed to increase awareness about environmental protection.
Furthermore, steps were taken to reduce harmful gas emissions by minimizing the use of fossil-fuel-powered machinery in all Army establishments and to prevent greenhouse gas leaks by inspecting all air conditioners and refrigerators used in the camps.
