A solemn military funeral was held on Sunday (15) evening at the new crematorium of the General Cemetery, Borella, to bid farewell to the late General Hamilton Wanasinghe (Retd) VSV USP ndc, one of the former Commanders of the Army. The ceremony was attended by a large gathering of military personnel, dignitaries, and mourners who came together to honour the distinguished Officer’s service to the nation.
Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, was present to pay his final respects and formally acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the late Commander of the Army.
In accordance with military traditions, troops of the Sri Lanka Artillery received the remains with a ceremonial presentation of arms before placing the coffin, draped in the National Flag, onto a gun carriage. As the funeral procession advanced to the crematorium, Army personnel and family members formed a solemn cortege behind the coffin.
A Special Part I Order, issued by the Adjutant General of the Sri Lanka Army, was read aloud to those in attendance, reflecting the late General’s service record and the nation’s gratitude for his service. This was followed by a symbolic gun salute, the highest military honour accorded to a Fallen Senior Officer.
The poignant sounding of the “Last Post” marked the final farewell, signifying that the soldier had been laid to rest. The remains were then formally carried to the crematorium.
As a customary gesture of honour, the Commander of the Army presented the bereaved family with the decorations and medals earned by General Hamilton Wanasinghe (Retd) VSV USP ndc during his exemplary military career.
The funeral was attended by Clergy, Members of Parliament, past Commanders of the Army, retired Senior Officers, and serving personnel of the Tri-Forces, all of whom paid tribute to a revered leader and decorated Senior Officer of the Sri Lanka Army.
