A professionally structured Exercise “Staff Ride” was successfully conducted on 06 August 2025, under the strategic direction of the Commander of the Army and the supervision and guidance of the Commandant of the Army War College, as part of the ongoing commitment to enhance operational level military education for middle grade Officers. The Commander, Security Forces Headquarters (East) extended his invaluable support in organizing the exercise at an exemplary level.
This field-based case study offered participants an immersive learning experience, focusing on the Battle of Thoppigala, a pivotal engagement during the Eastern Humanitarian Operation that marked a decisive phase in regaining control of the Eastern Province.
The “Staff Ride” designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with ground realities, provided Student Officers with a detailed understanding of terrain, tactics, decision-making, and command challenges faced during the battle. The exercise enabled them to analyze operational complexities directly at the historical battlefield site.
A unique highlight of the event was the participation of tactical-level commanders who had played active roles in the battle. Their presence added exceptional value, as they clarified doubts, addressed unclear areas, shared first-hand insights and enriching the learning experience for the next generation of Army leaders.
This initiative reaffirmed the Army War College’s focus on practical, reflective learning and its dedication to producing strategically-minded, historically-informed Officers ready to lead in complex operational environments.
