Commander of the Army Lauds the Distinguished Service of Retiring Chief of Staff

Major General Chandana Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, the outgoing Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment (GR), was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, along with his family members on 23 June 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after completing a distinguished career spanning over 36 years.

Below is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General M.G.W.W.W.M.C.B. Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 20 January 1989 for the Intake 31 - IMA. Upon successful completion of military training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gajaba Regiment on 05 October 1990. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 10 October 2021. The Senior Officer retires from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 26 June 2025 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was holding the appointments of Chief of Staff at Army Headquarters, Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Sports Committees.

Major General M.G.W.W.W.M.C.B. Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc held a range of key appointments throughout his distinguished career. He served as the Platoon Commander of the 4th Battalion, the Gajaba Regiment, Platoon Commander and Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion, the Gajaba Regiment, Officer Commanding of the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Gajaba Regiment, Troop Commander and Squadron Commander of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Brigade Major of Headquarters 534 Infantry Brigade and Headquarters 524 Infantry Brigade, and Staff Officer 2 (Additional) of the Military Secretary’s Branch. He also served as the Second-in-Command of the 9th and 3rd Battalions of the Gajaba Regiment, Senior Staff Officer U1 Branch (Administration) in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

He further served as the Commanding Officer of the 8th Battalion, the Gajaba Regiment, Staff Officer 1 (Administration) at the Regimental Centre of the Gajaba Regiment, Research Coordinator and Dean of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Colonel (General Staff) of Headquarters 22 Infantry Division, Officiating Commander of the 511 Infantry Brigade, Director Media of Army Headquarters and Director/Spokesman at the Media Centre of the Ministry of Defence. He was also appointed as Assistant Military Secretary at the Military Secretary’s Branch, General Officer Commanding of the 52 and 51 Infantry Divisions, Military Secretary, Adjutant General, Director General General Staff of Army Headquarters, Colonel of the Regiment of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment, and Commander of the Security Forces (Jaffna). He held the posts of Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Deputy Chief of Staff, Chief of Staff; the second most senior appointment in the Sri Lanka Army and Chairman of the Army Sports Committees.

The Senior Officer has been awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (twice) and the Rana Sura Padakkama (twice) in recognition of his dedicated and valiant service to the Sri Lanka Army.

He has successfully completed numerous local and overseas military courses, including the Platoon Commanders Tactics Course (Phase II), Platoon Commanders Course (Phase III), Company Commanders Refresher Course, Unit Administration Course, Army Command and Staff Course, Pre-Commission Training Course in India, Regimental Signal Officers Course in India, Young Officers Course in India, Junior Command Course in India, Military Induction Training Course in Haiti, United Nations-Civil Military Coordination Training of Trainers Course in Uganda, National Security Course in the Republic of Korea, and the Korean Language Course in the Republic of Korea.

He also pursued academic qualifications, obtaining a Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS), Sri Lanka, and a Master of Arts in International Relations at the University of Colombo.
