Commander of the Army Commends the Notable Service of Retiring Major General

Major General G.S Fonseka USP psc was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 13th February 2025, along with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary service in various challenging roles throughout his career, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war period. The Commander of the Army also acknowledged the crucial support provided by his family throughout his tenure.

In response, Major General G.S Fonseka USP psc expressed his profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support extended by the Army Chief. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a token of appreciation, along with gifts for his family. The gesture was reciprocated by the retiring Senior Officer.

Major General G.S. Fonseka USP psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet into the Intake 35 on 2 January 1991. Upon successfully completing military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Signal Corps on 29 August 1992. Elevating through the ranks during his tenure in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 30 September 2024. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 18 February 2025 upon reaching the age of 55. At the time of his retirement, he was holding the appointment of Director, National Cadet Corps.

Throughout his career, he held various key appointments, including Platoon Commander of the Internal Security Platoon - 4th Regiment, Sri Lanka Signal Corps (Silawathura), Troop Commander of the 4th Regiment, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Instructor of the Advanced Infantry Battalion Training Team at the Army Training School, Instructor at the Combat Training School, Signal Officer at the Headquarters of the Armoured Brigade, Acting Adjutant of the 4th Regiment, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Signal Officer at the Headquarters of the 53 Infantry Division, Officer Commanding (Electronic Warfare) at the Headquarters of the 55 Infantry Division, Adjutant of the 4th Regiment, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, and Aide-de-Camp to the then Colonel Commandant, Major General A.M.C.W.B. Senevirathna (Retd) USP ndc psc.

Additionally, he served as an Officer Instructor of the Officer Cadet Wing at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Adjutant of the Officer Cadet Wing at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Officer Commanding of the 6th Reinforcement (RFT) Regiment, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, General Staff Officer 2 (Operations & Training) at the Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), General Staff Officer 2 at the Directorate of Operations, General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) at the Headquarters of the 55 Infantry Division and 11 Infantry Division, Staff Officer 1 (Career Planning Cell) at the Military Secretary’s Branch, Commanding Officer of the 7th Reinforcement Regiment, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at the Headquarters of the 21 Infantry Division, Staff Officer of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), Commander of the 653 Infantry Brigade, Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Signal Corps, and Director of the National Cadet Corps.

For his exceptional, distinguished, and loyal service, he was awarded the Uththama Seva Padakkama during his tenure.

During his illustrious military career, he completed numerous local and international training courses, including the Advanced Infantry Battalion Training Instructors Course, the Geographic Information System (GIS) Basic Course (conducted by the University of Moratuwa), the Army Command and Staff Course, the Computer Course (conducted by the Orient Academy Limited), the Young Officers (Signals) Course in India, and the United Nations Civil-Military Coordination Course in Indonesia.

In addition, the Senior Officer has pursued higher education, earning a Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI).
