A fire broke out on 30 March 2026 at a private shop located on Karawita Road in Rathnapura. The incident is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.
The fire was successfully brought under control through the collective efforts of the troops of the 11th Battalion, the Gemunu Watch, Rathnapura Police, Fire Brigade Rathnapura and residents in the area.
