The Sri Lanka Army, continuing its annual tradition, presented sixteen tons of dried coconuts (copra) for the illuminations of the Sri Dalada Perahera on 01 August 2024, marking the eleventh consecutive year. Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
This effort, primarily undertaken by the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment with assistance from other regiments, is specifically aimed at supporting the religious needs of Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth).
Upon arrival, the Commander of the Army, together with Mrs. Janaki Liyanage, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), was welcomed by Major General S.R.B. Aluvihare RWP RSP ndu psc, Chief of Staff and Colonel of the Regiment, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and Major General B.K.G.M.L. Rodrigo RSP psc IG, Commander of Security Force - Central. The Army Chief then met Mr. Pradeep Nilanga Dela, the Chief Custodian of Sri Dalada Maligawa, and participated in religious observances.
Troops carrying Buddhist flags and flower trays delivered the copra stock to the temple, where Diyawadana Nilame greeted the Commander and led him to the inner chamber. After the formal handover, a brief meeting was held to discuss the upcoming Esala Perahera, its security and other concerns. A video was shown to appreciate the Army's ongoing support for the festival, and Diyawadana Nilame expressed his gratitude.
Finally, Diyawadana Nilame presented a special memento to the Army Chief and Chief of Staff in recognition of the Army's unwavering contribution and the gesture was reciprocated. Senior Officers, Officers, members of the ASVU and Other Ranks participated in the event.
