Major General S.P.G Gamage RWP RSP USP was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 11th February 2025, along with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army.
During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary service in various challenging roles throughout his career, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war period as a sapper officer. The Commander of the Army also acknowledged the crucial support provided by his family throughout his tenure.
In response, Major General S.P.G Gamage RWP RSP USP expressed his profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support extended by the Army Chief. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a token of appreciation, along with gifts for his family.
Major General S.P.G Gamage RWP RSP USP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake 35 on 02nd January 1991. Upon successfully completing military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers on 29th August 1992. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks throughout his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 30th September 2024. The Senior Officer retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 15th February 2025 upon reaching the age of 55. At the time of his retirement, he was holding the appointments of General Officer Commanding, Engineer Division, and Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Gymnastics Committee.
Throughout his career, he held various key appointments, including Troop Commander of the 62, 63, and 64 Plant Squadrons of the 6 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Intelligence Officer of the 8 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Aide-De-Camp to the then Colonel Commandant, Major General E.H. Samaratunga (Retd), Adjutant of the 8 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Troop Commander of the 82 Field Squadron of the 8 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Officer Commanding of the 82/83 Field Squadron of the 8 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Officer Commanding (Training Wing) of the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, Officer Commanding of the 11 Field Squadron and 1 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, General Staff Officer 2 (Training) at the Security Force Headquarters (East), Second-in-Command of the 8 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Officer Commanding of the Headquarters Squadron of the 1 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Second-in-Command of the 6 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Officer Commanding of the Sri Lanka Battalion at the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Officiating General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at the Headquarters of Task Force 3, Senior Coordinator at the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Commanding Officer of the 1 Field Engineer Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers, General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) at the Headquarters of the 52 Infantry Division, Commanding Officer of the Headquarters Battalion of Army Headquarters, Commander of the 231 Infantry Brigade, Commander of the 141 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier (General Staff) at the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Director of the Directorate of Real Estate and Quartering at Army Headquarters, Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Deputy General Officer Commanding of the 12 Infantry Division, and General Officer Commanding of the Engineer Division.
In recognition of his bravery in the face of the enemy, the Senior Officer was awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) for his distinguished conduct. He was also awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) and, for his exceptional, distinguished, and loyal service, he was awarded the Uththama Seva Padakkama (USP).
During his military career, he completed numerous local and international training courses, including the Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course, International Humanitarian Law Course, Unit Accounting Officers Course, Law of Armed Conflict and Human Rights Course, Basic Parachute Course, Humanitarian Demining Training Course, Mine Action Management Course, Joint/Combined Exchange Training (JCET) Balance Style Course, Technical Preparation for Mine Action Plan Course, Humanitarian Demining Instructor Course, International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Advanced Refresher Course, Law of Armed Conflict Advanced Refresher Course, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Level I and II Course, Humanitarian Mine Action IMAS EOD Level III Course, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Response (Level II) Course, Young Officers’ Engineers Course in Pakistan, Combined Officers Bomb Disposal Course in India, United Nations Military Induction Training Course in Haiti, and Urban Land Transport Management Course in Singapore.
