Army Chief Commends Distinguished Service of Retiring Military Secretary

Major General I.A.N.B Perera RWP USP ndu psc, Military Secretary of the Army, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 16 August 2024, together with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a notable 34-years career.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his tenure, both during the war and in the post-war era. The Commander also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his dedicated family throughout his career.

In response, Major General I.A.N.B Perera RWP USP ndu psc expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support provided by the Army Chief. Towards the end of the interaction, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts for his family.

Major General I.A.N.B Perera RWP USP ndu psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in Intake KDA – 07 on 14 November 1989. Upon successful completion of military training at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy - Ratmalana and the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gajaba Regiment on 11 November 1991. He was steadily promoted through the ranks during his service in the Army, ultimately achieving the rank of Major General on 04 February 2023. The Senior Officer retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 21 August 2024, upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointments of Military Secretary and Colonel Commandant of Corps of Engineer Services.

During his career, he held various appointments, including Platoon Commander of the 3rd Battalion Gajaba Regiment; Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion Gajaba Regiment; Officer Commanding of the 12th Battalion Gajaba Regiment, Officer Commanding of the 6th Battalion Gajaba Regiment, Staff Officer 2 (Logistics) of the Regimental Centre, Gajaba Regiment, Squadron Commander of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Staff Officer 2 (Administration) of the Security Force Headquarters (East), Brigade Major of the Headquarters - 211 Infantry Brigade, Second-in-Command of the 6th Battalion Gajaba Regiment, Military Observer of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), Officiating Commanding Officer of the 1st Reinforcement Battalion Gajaba Regiment, Staff Officer 1 (Administration) of the Regimental Centre - Gajaba Regiment, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Gajaba Regiment, General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) of the Directorate of Operations - Army Headquarters, Commanding Officer of the Recruit Training Wing - Army Training School, Staff Officer 1 of the Chief of Staff Office - Army Headquarters, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, University Hospital - General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Colonel (General Staff) of the Headquarters - 21 Infantry Division, Director Academics of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Officiating Commander of the 574 Infantry Brigade, Assistant Military Secretary 3 of the Military Secretary’s Branch - Army Headquarters, Assistant Military Secretary of the Military Secretary’s Branch - Army Headquarters, Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, General Officer Commanding of the 21 Infantry Division, Military Secretary of the Army Headquarters, and Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Engineer Services.

The Senior Officer was awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama in recognition of his dedicated service during his tenure in the Sri Lanka Army.

He completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including the Officer Par Excellence Course, Artillery Observation Course, Platoon Commanders Course, Junior Command Course, Army Command and Staff Course, International Humanitarian Law & Human Rights Training Course for Officers, International Humanitarian Law & Human Rights Instructor Training Course for Officers of Armed Forces, Potential Observer and Staff Officers Course, Commanding Officers’ Refresher Course, Defence Attaché Orientation Course in Defence and Diplomacy, Young Officers Course - Pakistan, Parachute Descent Course - India, Junior Command Course - India, United Nations Military Experts on Mission Course - Finland, Unit Command and Staff Course - Bangladesh, and National Security and War Course - Pakistan.

The Senior Officer also pursued several higher educational and non-military courses, including Bachelor of Science (Defence Studies) in Mechanical Engineering at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Master of Science in Management at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, and Master of Science in National Security and War Studies at the National Defence University - Pakistan. He has also completed Certificate of Professional English Course at the Open University of Sri Lanka.
