60th Sri Lanka Army Athletics Championship Concludes

The 60th Sri Lanka Army Athletics Championship concluded on 20 August 2025 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama.

Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Upon arrival, the Army Chief was warmly welcomed by Major General B.G.S. Fernando USP Hdmc psc, Chairman of the Army Athletics Committee (AAC). In his welcome address, the Chairman of the AAC extended greetings to the gathering before the commencement of the closing ceremony.

During the closing ceremony, a series of final events were held including the 100m Men, 100m Women, 1500m Men, 4x400m Men and 4x400m Women.

Army athletes achieved remarkable success, securing one national record, one new army athletics record, and 11 new meet records during the tournament. The national record was set in the men's pole vault with a height of 5.18m by Craftsman K. Puvitharan of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Several events saw new meet records set: in the men's category, the 100m was clocked at 10.34 seconds, the 800m at 1:48.87 seconds, the 400m hurdles at 51.36 seconds, the pole vault reached 5.18m, the javelin throw marked 79.49m and the decathlon totaled 7044 points. On the women's side, new records were achieved in the 400m at 52.86 seconds, long jump at 6.20m, 4×100m relay at 46.82 seconds, 4×800m relay at 09:05.50 seconds, and 4×1500m relay at 19:24.78 seconds.

Towards the end of the proceedings, the Commander of the Army, together with Senior Officers, awarded medals and trophies to the athletes.

Special trophies were awarded to following achievers:

Inter-Regiment Challenge Trophy for Champion Regiment (Women) – Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (257 points).

Inter-Regiment Challenge Trophy for Most Outstanding Runner-up Regiment (Women) – Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (212 points).

Overall Champions Challenge Trophy for Champion Regiment (Men) – Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (272 points).

Inter Regiment Challenge Trophy for Most Outstanding Runner-up Regiment (Men) – Sri Lanka Artillery (198 points).

Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks and a large gathering of spectators witnessed the event.
