Army Initiative Gets New Home to Widow in Oddusuddan

The sponsorship given by overseas and local members of the Colombo Royal College Tamil Class (1980), enabled 23 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) troops of the 642 Brigade under the 64 Division of the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) to erect a decent house to a helpless widow who was living in a shanty at Oddusudan.
A few months ago, the group of those old boys, led by Major General (Retd) Ravi Rathnasingham after the miserable plight of the widow, Mrs Rathnam Pathmarajini with her daughter was brought to their attention, agreed to construct a new home for her through the technical and manpower support of the Army in Mullaittivu.
In consultation with the Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu, 23 VIR troops under the guidance of Lieutenant Colonel Senarath Bandara, Commanding Officer, 23 VIR undertook the challenge of constructing this house within several weeks with raw materials, provided by the sponsors.
On 9 November, Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu as the Chief Guest attended the inaugural warming ceremony of the new house where Hindu religious rites and rituals were observed. The Chief Guest, together with the sponsor, Major General (Retd) Ravi Rathnasingham and representative donors unveiled a plaque and cut a ribbon before the keys were delivered to the beneficiary.
Major General Nissanka Eriyagama, General Officer Commanding, 64 Division, Brigadier Medanka Alwis, Commander, 642 Brigade, representative sponsors, state officials, Officers in the area, civilians and Other Ranks participated in the warming ceremony.
