GW Presidential Colours Enshrined in New ‘Colours Chamber’

The prestigious Gemunu Watch (GW) Regimental Headquarters at Kuruwita on the eve of the forthcoming National War Heroes Day added dignity and recognition to GW Colours and Insignia awarded to the Gemunu Watch troops by enshrining them in a specially-constructed ‘Colours Chamber’ inside the 1st Battalion of Gemunu Watch in Diyatalawa on a suggestion made by Major General T.S Bangsajayah, Colonel of the Regiment, GW and Director General General Staff and the Commander of the Army Training Command (ARTRAC).

The 1st Battalion Gemunu Watch was awarded President’s Colours and Regimental Colours at the Public Ground in Galle on 15 August 1980 by HE the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka His Excellency J.R Jayewardene who was also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The same Colours were re-awarded on 15 August 2012 by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces HE the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Gemunu Regimental Parade Ground in Kuruwita.

At the invitation of Lieutenant Colonel R.P.C.A Samaranayake, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Gemunu Watch who was instrumental in making the project a success, Major General Bangsajayah on Friday (16) during a simple ceremony unveiled a plaque and cut a ribbon before those Presidential Colours and insignia were enshrined in the new Colours Chamber. |
