The Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) Regimental Headquarters at Panagoda, reawakening memorable heroic acts of 3878 fallen SLLI War Heroes in contemporary times once again, paid its glowing tribute to their memory this evening (25) by staging a colourful military ceremony, blended with a religious segment. The SLLI, the oldest and one of the most reputed regiments in the Army with its motto “I Serve,” was raised in 1881.

Galle Face green Thursday morning (10) amid a mammoth gathering of distinguished invitees, state officials, past Commanders, veterans, spouses stood adorned with fluttering Army flags for a couple of hours when nearly a column of 2,000 troops rolled across the esplanade and saluted the day’s Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army who arrived there to mark the historic 70th Army Anniversary, organized in an unprecedented scale.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, 23rd Commander of the Army during the 70th Army Day (10 October), commemorated at Galle Face Green this morning (10) coloured with a mammoth parade announced that a total of 210 Officers and 7000 Other Ranks for the first time of the Army history were granted promotions and confirmation of their ranks to coincide with the landmark event.

Sri Lanka Army, the much-sought service provider and the Nation’s most formidable land force with unmatched records of gallantry, dedication and selfless commitment turns 70 years of age today (October 10) and commemorates the milestone with a series of military formalities. It was founded on 10 October 1949 as the Ceylon Army after forming its first regular force under the command of Brigadier R. Sinclair. With the establishment of its own Military Academy in Diyatalawa, Brigadier Anton Muthukumaru assumed the mantle of office as the first Sri Lankan Commander of the then Ceylon Army.
