Major General K.V.I.L. Jayaweera USP, Commander, Commando Brigade, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 13 November 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished military career spanning over 33 years.
Brief Profile of the Retiring Senior Officer:
Major General K.V.I.L. Jayaweera USP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet into the Intake – PMA 05 on 24 July 1992. Upon successful completion of military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Commando Regiment on 15 April 1993. After steadily elevating through the ranks over the course of his service, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 30 October 2025. He retires from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 22 November 2025 on reaching 55 years of age, while holding the appointment of Commander, Commando Brigade.
During his illustrious career, he has held numerous key appointments including Team Commander of 1 Commando Regiment, Instructor at the Commando Regiment Training School, Group Commander of 1 Commando Regiment, Officer Commanding (Administration) of 4 Commando Regiment, Officer Commanding of the Close Protection Team to the Commander of the Army at Army Headquarters, Operations and Training Officer of 2 Commando Regiment, Chief Instructor at the Commando Regiment Special Warfare Training School, Second-in-Command of 1 Commando Regiment, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) of Headquarters, 56 Infantry Division, Military Observer of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, General Staff Officer 1 of the Regimental Centre - Commando Regiment, Commanding Officer of 1 Commando Regiment, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) of Headquarters, 24 Infantry Division, Deputy Commandant of the Regimental Centre - Commando Regiment, Commander of 613 Infantry Brigade and Commander of Commando Brigade.
In recognition of his committed and valiant service to the Sri Lanka Army, he was awarded the Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP).
He has successfully completed numerous local courses including Platoon Commanders Tactics Course, Basic Commando Course, Advanced Commando Course, Battalion Support Weapons Officers' Course, Basic Parachute Training Course, International Humanitarian Law & Human Rights Instructor Training Course, Anti-Hijack and Hostage Rescue Course and Potential Observers and Staff Officers Course.
Overseas, he has attended courses such as Officer Cadet Training Course – Pakistan, Ghatak Course – India, Young Officers Tactical Course – Pakistan, Commando Course – India, Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare Course – India, Junior Command Course – India, Very Important Person (VIP) Protection and Evasive Driving Course – Pakistan and Senior Command Course – India.
