Major General G.L.S.W Liyanage USP nps psc, Chief Signal Officer of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 19 November 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished military career spanning over 35 years.
Brief Profile of the Retiring Senior Officer:
Major General G.L.S.W Liyanage USP nps psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake KDA–8 on 03 November 1990. Upon successful completion of military training at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Signal Corps on 14 November 1992.
During his extensive military career, he progressed through successive ranks and was promoted to the rank of Major General on 08 January 2024. The senior officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 26 November 2025 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as the Chief Signal Officer of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps.
Throughout his illustrious career, Major General G.L.S.W Liyanage USP nps psc has held many key appointments including Training Officer of the 1st Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Platoon Commander of the Internal Security Platoon of the 3rd Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Platoon Commander of the 5th Reinforcement (RFT) Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Troop Commander of the 3rd Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Signal Officer of the Headquarters of the 533 Infantry Brigade, Signal Officer of the Headquarters of the 55 Infantry Division, Officer Commanding of the Signal Base Workshop in Panagoda, Signal Officer of the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Officer Instructor of the Officer Cadet Wing at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Director Academics at the Sri Lanka Military Academy and Commandant of the Signal Base Workshop in Panagoda.
He also performed duties as the Deputy Chief, Military Personnel Officer, U-1 of the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). He served as the Commanding Officer of the 2nd (Volunteer) Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps. He was the Head of the Non Tech Division of the Research Analysis Projection and Development Branch at the Directorate of Research, Concept and Doctrine at Army Headquarters. He served as Colonel (General Staff) at Security Force Headquarters (Mullaitivu). He was the Colonel (Plans) at the Directorate of Plans at Army Headquarters. He served as the Commander of the 143 Infantry Brigade. He commanded the Signal Brigade. He served as the Director of the Directorate of Information Technology, the Director of the Directorate of Overseas Operations, the Director General of the Directorate of Overseas Operations, the Commander Logistics Command at Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps and as the Chief Signal Officer.
In recognition of his dedicated and exemplary service to the Sri Lanka Army, he was decorated with the Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP).
The senior officer has successfully completed the Army Command and Staff Course.
He also attended several overseas courses including the Young Officers (Signals) Course in India and the Signal Company Commanders Course in India.
He has completed a Bachelor of Science (Defence Studies) in Electrical Engineering at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, a Master of Defence Studies at the University of Kelaniya and a Master of Arts in Security Studies (Civil Military Relations) at the Naval Postgraduate School, United States of America.
