Major General W.B.J.K Wimalaratne RWP RSP, Director General Infantry, Army Headquarters, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 08 October 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after completing a distinguished military career spanning over 35 years.
Brief Profile of the Retiring Senior Officer:
Major General W.B.J.K Wimalaratne RWP RSP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake – PMA 2 on 07 September 1990. Upon successful completion of military training at the Pakistan Military Academy and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gemunu Watch on 13 March 1991. He was steadily elevated through subsequent ranks and promoted to Major General on 01 January 2024.
The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 20 October 2025 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointments of Director General Infantry, Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch, and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Bodybuilding, Weightlifting, and Powerlifting Committee.During his career, he served in numerous key appointments, including Platoon Commander of 4th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding of 4th and 12th Battalions the Gemunu Watch, Officer Instructor of Infantry Training Centre, Adjutant of Regimental Headquarters Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Motor Transport Officer of Operations Command in Colombo, Operations and Training Officer of 5th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Chief Instructor of Airmobile Training School, Second-in-Command of 6th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Staff Officer 2 (Administration) of Directorate of Welfare at Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 1 (Administration) of Military Hospital (Narahenpita), Commanding Officer of 24th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Sector Commander of Sector 07 (14 Infantry Division), General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at Headquarters of Overall Operations Command (Colombo), General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) of Security Force Headquarters (Kilinochchi), Security and Administration Officer of Sri Lanka Army Security and Engineering Service Branch in Suhurupaya, Colonel (Forward Maintenance Area) of Forward Maintenance Area (East), Commander of 241 Infantry Brigade, Director of Directorate of Recruiting at Army Headquarters, Centre Commandant of Regimental Centre the Gemunu Watch, District Coordinator (Rathnapura District) of Green Agriculture Operation Centre, District Military Coordinator (Rathnapura District) of Multi-Sector Combined Mechanism for Assisting Rural Economic Revival Centres to Ensure Food Security and Nutrition, Commandant of Infantry Training Centre, General Officer Commanding of 51 Infantry Division, Director General Infantry of Directorate of Infantry and Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch.
In recognition of his loyal and dedicated service, he was decorated with several medals, including the Rana Wickrama Padakkama awarded for 3 times and Rana Sura Padakkama awarded for 2 times.
He successfully completed a number of local courses, including the Basic Marksmanship Course, Regimental Signal Officers’ Course, Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course, Young Officers Course, and Second-in-Command Course. Overseas, he attended the Young Officers’ Tactical Course in Pakistan, Junior Command Course in India, Parachute Descent Course in India, and United Nations Military Contingent Officers Course in India.
Additionally, he obtained several higher educational and professional qualifications, including a Certificate Course on Microsoft Applications and a Diploma in Office Automation Systems at Science Land Information Technology (Private) Limited, a Short-term Course for Defence Media and Communication conducted by the Department of Mass Media Studies, Sri Palee Campus, University of Colombo, and a Master of Public Management at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration.
