Army Chief Commends Notable Service of Retiring Major General

Major General M.W.A.R.C Wijesuriya RSP USP ndc, General Officer Commanding of 21 Infantry Division, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 13 November 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished military career spanning over 34 years.

Brief Profile of the Retiring senior officer:

Major General M.W.A.R.C Wijesuriya RSP USP ndc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet into the Intake KDA–9 on 17 November 1991. Upon successful completion of military training at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps on 22 November 1993.

During his extensive military career, he was steadily elevated through successive ranks and was promoted to the rank of Major General on 18 January 2025. The senior officer retires from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 19 November 2025, upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as the General Officer Commanding, 21 Infantry Division.

Throughout his illustrious career, Major General M.W.A.R.C Wijesuriya RSP USP ndc has held many key appointments including Troop Leader, Assistant Adjutant and Adjutant of the 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps. He also served as the General Staff Officer 3 at the Headquarters Armoured Brigade, Officer Commanding of Headquarters Squadron, ‘A’ Squadron and ‘C’ Squadron of the 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment, Platoon Commander and Staff Officer 2 (Instructor Tutor) at the Officer Cadet Wing of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Brigade Major at the Headquarters Armoured Brigade, Wing Commander of the Trade Training Wing at the Armoured Corps Training Centre, and Second-in-Command of the 5th Reconnaissance Regiment.

He also performed duties as the Military Observer and Team Site Leader with the United Nations Mission in Sudan. He commanded the 8th (Reinforcement) Regiment and the 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps. He held the appointments of Staff Officer 1 (Additional) at the Directorate of Welfare, Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 1 at Laya Leisure Kukuleganga, and Staff Officer 1 (Administration and Quartering) at the Headquarters 52 Infantry Division. He also served as the Officiating Deputy Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Commandant of the Armoured Corps Training Centre, Commander of the 232 Infantry Brigade, Commander of the Armoured Brigade, Deputy General Officer Commanding of the 57 Infantry Division, Deputy Commandant of the Army War College, Deputy General Officer Commanding of the 12 Infantry Division, and General Officer Commanding of the 21 Infantry Division.

In recognition of his devoted and gallant service to the Sri Lanka Army, he was decorated with the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) on two occasions and the Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP).

The Senior Officer has successfully completed several local courses including the Unit Administration Course, Potential Observer and Staff Officers’ Course, United Nations Protection of Civilians Training-of-Trainers Course, United Nations Civil-Military Coordination Course and the National Security and Strategic Studies Course.

He also attended several overseas courses such as the Young Officers (Armour) Course in India, Armour Officers Advanced Technical Course in Pakistan, Junior Staff (Linked with Mid-Career) Course in Pakistan, Combat Group Commanders Course in India, Senior Command Course in India and the Summer Semester Course on Health Aspects of Disaster in Australia.

He has followed a Counselling Course for Officers of the Armed Forces and Police conducted by the National Cadet Corps Training Centre, Rantembe. He has also completed a Certificate Course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, a Diploma Course in Professional Diplomacy and World Affairs at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute, a Higher National Diploma in Counselling at the Sri Lanka Foundation, a Bachelor of Arts (Defence Studies) at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
