Major General W.M.S.C.K Wanasinghe RSP USP was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 06 February 2025, along with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army.
During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary service in various challenging roles throughout his career, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war period. The Commander of the Army also acknowledged the crucial support provided by his family throughout his tenure.
In response, Major General W.M.S.C.K Wanasinghe RSP USP expressed his profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support extended by the Army Chief. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a token of appreciation, along with gifts for his family.
Major General W.M.S.C.K Wanasinghe RSP USP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake – PMA 2 on 07 September 1990. Upon successfully completing military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, and the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gajaba Regiment on 13 March 1991. He was subsequently transferred to the Mechanized Infantry Regiment on 04 February 2007 with its inauguration. Rising through the ranks over the course of his service, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 16 October 2023. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 10 February 2025, upon reaching 55 years of age. Prior to his retirement, he held the appointments of General Officer Commanding, 21 Infantry Division, and Colonel of the Regiment, Mechanized Infantry Regiment.
Throughout his career, he held various key appointments, including Platoon Commander of the 4th Battalion, Gajaba Regiment, Officer Commanding of the 4th Battalion, Gajaba Regiment, Staff Officer 2 (Training) at the Combat Training School, Staff Officer 2 (Logistics) at the Regimental Centre, Gajaba Regiment, Major (Administration and Quartering) at the Headquarters of the 534 Infantry Brigade, and Second-in-Command of the 3rd Battalion, Mechanized Infantry Regiment. Additionally, he served as the Officiating Commanding Officer of the 4th Battalion, Mechanized Infantry Regiment, Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion, Mechanized Infantry Regiment, Staff Officer 1 at Laya Leisure – Kukuleganga, and Commandant of Abimansala 2 – Kamburupitiya. He also served as Director (Operations and Administration) of the Magam Ruhunupura International Convention Centre, Deputy Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre – Mechanized Infantry, Colonel General Staff at the Headquarters – 58 Infantry Division, Officiating Commander of the 591 Infantry Brigade, Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre Mechanized Infantry Regiment, Brigadier General Staff at Security Force Headquarters (Central), Director General of the Directorate of Welfare at Army Headquarters, General Officer Commanding of the 21 Infantry Division, and Colonel of the Regiment of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment.
In recognition of his distinguished conduct in the face of the enemy, the Senior Officer was awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama. For his exceptional, distinguished, and loyal service, he was awarded the Uththama Seva Padakkama.
During his military career, he completed numerous local and international training courses, including the Artillery Observation Post Course, Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course, Civil Affairs Course, Sports Administrators Course, Global Peace Operations Initiative – United Nations Civil-Military Coordination Course, Basic Cadet Course in Pakistan, Young Officers’ Tactical Course in Pakistan, Officers’ Weapon Course in Bangladesh, Infantry Battalion Commander Course (Motorized Infantry) in Russia, Junior Command Course in India, and United Nations Protection of Civilians Course in Pakistan.
In addition, the Senior Officer pursued higher education, earning a Diploma in Computer Hardware at the Golden Key Institute of Information Technology Limited, a Diploma in Psychological Counselling at the University of Ruhuna, an Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management at the Western Lanka Hotel School, a Diploma in Creative Diplomacy at the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies, and a Master of Arts in Sociology at the University of Ruhuna.
