Army Athlete Sets New Javelin Throw Record and Qualifies for World Championship

The National Athlete Selection Tournament 2025 took place at the Diyagama Stadium from 8 to 9 March 2025.

Corporal R.A.S.J Ranasinghe of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers regained the Sri Lankan record in the Men’s Javelin Throw with an impressive 85.78 meters, surpassing the previous record of 85.45 meters set by Rumesh Tharanga in 2024. His outstanding performance also secured his qualification for the World Athletics Championship 2025 to be held in Tokyo, Japan.

The athlete previously represented Sri Lanka at the Rio 2016 Olympics and set a national record of 83.04 meters. He won silver in Javelin Throw at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati (80.25m) and bronze at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu (74.97m). Additionally, he clinched a bronze medal at the 2019 World Military Games in Wuhan, China, with a throw of 75.35 meters.
