Major General T.C.M.G.S.T. Cooray RWP RSP USP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding, 11 Infantry Division, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 08 December 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished military career spanning over 34 years.
Brief profile of the retiring senior officer:
Major General T.C.M.G.S.T. Cooray RWP RSP USP ndc psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake KDA–9 on 17 November 1991. Upon successful completion of military training at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and posted to the Commando Regiment on 22 November 1993.
During his extensive military career, he elevated through subsequent ranks and promoted to Major General on 18 January 2025. He will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 09 December 2025 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as the General Officer Commanding, 11 Infantry Division.
Throughout his illustrious military career, the senior officer has held numerous key appointments. He served as Instructor of Commando Regiment Training School and Team Commander of Bravo Group at 2 Commando Regiment. He was also Team Commander of the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol Team at 2 Commando Regiment and Officiating Officer Commanding of Bravo Group at 2 Commando Regiment. He held the posts of Adjutant of 2 Commando Regiment, Officer Commanding of Delta Group at 2 Commando Regiment and Officer Commanding of Anti-Hijack and Hostage Release Group at Commando Regiment. He served as Adjutant of 4 Commando Regiment, General Staff Officer 2 (Operations and Training) at the Regimental Centre of Commando Regiment and Coordinating Officer at Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol Team of Commando Regiment, Officer Commanding of the Very Important Person Escort Division at the President's Guard, General Staff Officer 1 (Psychological Operations) of the Directorate of Psychological Operations at Army Headquarters and Staff Officer of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). He held appointments as General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at the Headquarters of 61 Infantry Division, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations Additional) of the Directorate of Operations at Army Headquarters, Commanding Officer of 4 Commando Regiment, Personal Security Officer to the Commander of the Army at Army Headquarters, Peacekeeping Affairs Officer at United Nations Headquarters in the United States of America, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations and Training) at the Regimental Centre of Commando Regiment and Commanding Officer of 3 Commando Regiment.
He also served as Officiating Senior Instructor of the Unit Command Course Section at Officer Career Development Centre, Chief Instructor of Officer Career Development Centre, Commander of 512 Infantry Brigade, Assistant Military Secretary 2 of Military Secretary’s Branch at Army Headquarters, Commander of 112 Infantry Brigade, Secretary of the National Defence College, Commandant of Army War College and General Officer Commanding of 11 Infantry Division.
In recognition of his dedicated and exemplary service, he was awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP), Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) three times and the Utthama Seva Padakkama (USP).
The senior officer successfully completed the Basic Commando Course, Advanced Commando Course, Unit Administration Course, Basic Marksmanship Course, Unit Coaches Course, Computer Course, Junior Staff Course, Army Command and Staff Course, Potential Observers and Staff Officers Course and National Security and Strategic Studies Course. He also attended several overseas courses, including the Ghatak Course in India, Young Officers Course in India, Officers Anti-Armour Course in Pakistan, Basic Airborne Course in Pakistan, Commando Course in India conducted by the Training Centre, National Security Guard, Manesar, Gurgaon, India and Junior Command Course in India.
He further enhanced his professional qualifications by completing a Bachelor of Arts (Defence Studies) at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
