Army Chief Commends Notable Service of Retiring Senior Officer

Major General M.P.N.A. Muthumala USP psc, General Officer Commanding of 51 Infantry Division, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 08 October 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after completing a distinguished military career spanning over 34 years.

Below is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General M.P.N.A. Muthumala USP psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 29 April 1991 with Intake PMA 3. Upon successful completion of military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment on 14 April 1992. He was steadily elevated through the substantive ranks and was promoted to the rank of Major General on 30 September 2024.

The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 20 October 2025 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointment of General Officer Commanding of 51 Infantry Division.

During his extensive military career, he served as Platoon Commander of the 5th (Volunteer) Battalion of the Gajaba Regiment, Platoon Commander of the 6th Battalion in Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Platoon Commander of the 9th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Platoon Commander at the Army Training School, Officer Commanding of the 9th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, General Staff Officer 3 (Operations & Coordinating) at 23 Infantry Division, Aide-de-Camp to the then General Officer Commanding of 22 Infantry Division, Major General G.S.C Fonseka RWP RSP VSV USP rcds psc, General Staff Officer 3 (Operations) at 512 Infantry Brigade, General Staff Officer 3 and General Staff Officer 2 at Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Staff Officer 2 (Administration) at Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Military Observer of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), Second-in-Command of the 4th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Commanding Officer of the 4th Reinforcement (RFT) Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Commanding Officer of the 27th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at Headquarters 61 Infantry Division, General Staff Officer 1 at Defence Services Command and Staff College, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), Colonel (Ceremonial) of the Directorate of Personnel Administration at Army Headquarters, Colonel (Administration) of the Adjutant General’s Branch at Army Headquarters, Commander of 572 Infantry Brigade, Centre Commandant of Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Head of the Training Concept & Monitoring Wing of the Directorate of Research, Concepts & Doctrine, Director of the Directorate of Recruiting, Deputy General Officer Commanding at 59 Infantry Division, Commandant of the Infantry Training Centre, General Officer Commanding of 56 Infantry Division, and General Officer Commanding of 51 Infantry Division.

In recognition of his committed and valiant service to the Sri Lanka Army, he was awarded the Uththama Seva Padakkama.

In terms of military training, he completed several local courses, including the Basic Intelligence Course, Mechanical Transport Officers’ Course, Junior Staff Officers Refresher Course and Army Command and Staff Course.

His international training includes the Officer Cadet Short Service Course in Pakistan, Regimental Signal Officers’ Course in India, Young Officers Course in India, Mid-Career Course in Pakistan, United Nations Protection of Civilians Course in Pakistan, and Health Aspects of Disaster Course in Australia.

Academically, he holds a Foundation Course on Multimodal Transport & Logistics from the Academy for International Trade and Transport, a Certificate Course in Logistics Services Freight Forwarding & Multimodal from the same academy, a Diploma in Freight Forwarding from the Academy for International Trade and Transport and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
