Major General G.C.V. Fernando ndc, Director General of Directorate of Welfare, Army Headquarters, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 03 December 2025, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished military career spanning over 34 years.
Brief profile of the retiring senior officer:
Major General G.C.V. Fernando ndc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in Intake 37 on 26 August 1991. Upon successful completion of military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Signal Corps on 19 December 1993. After steadily elevating through the ranks, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 13 June 2025. He will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 11 December 2025 upon reaching 55 years of age, while holding the appointment of Director General of Directorate of Welfare, Army Headquarters.
During his illustrious career, he has held numerous key appointments including Platoon Commander of 5th Reinforcement (RFT) Regiment of Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Adjutant of 5th Reinforcement (RFT) Regiment of Sri Lanka Signal Corps, General Staff Officer 3 (Operations) of Task Force 3, General Staff Officer 3 (Operations) at Headquarters of 22 Infantry Division, General Staff Officer 3 (Operations) at Headquarters of Air Mobile Brigade, Adjutant of 4th Regiment of Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Signal Officer of Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), Senior Instructor at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Staff Officer 2 at Officers' Study Centre in Sri Lanka Military Academy, Officer Commanding of Communication Squadron of 4th Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Signal Officer of Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Second-in-Command of 10th Reinforcement (RFT) Regiment of Sri Lanka Signal Corps, and Officer Commanding of Signal Squadron in Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna).
He also performed duties as Chief Instructor of Marksmanship and Sniper Training School (MSTS), Officer Commanding of Signal Squadron at Sri Lanka Army Contingent in the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) at Headquarters of 64 Infantry Division, General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) at Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Commanding Officer of 9th Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Commanding Officer of Administration Wing at Officer Career Development Centre, General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) at Headquarters of 53 Infantry Division, Commanding Officer of Administration Wing at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Colonel (Logistics) at Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS), Brigadier (Coordinating) in Office of the Chief Signal Officer at Army Headquarters, Director of Directorate of Welfare at Army Headquarters and Director General of Directorate of Welfare at Army Headquarters.
He has successfully completed numerous local courses including Signal Young Officers’ Course, Basic Parachute Training Course, Basic Marksmanship Instructor Course, Unit Coaches Course, Practical Pistol Course and National Security and Strategic Studies Course.
Overseas, he has attended Officer Cadet Training Course in Pakistan, Signals Young Officers Course in India, Junior Staff Course (Signals) in Pakistan, Signals Company Commanders Course in India, and Radar Repair and Maintenance Engineering (Diploma) Course in China.
He has completed a Master of Business Administration in Logistics Management at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and qualified as a National Level 1 Range Officer by the National Range Officers Institute in Sri Lanka.
