Major General T.N Jayasooriya, 7th Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) of the Army assumed duties on Monday (29) after a brief ceremony at the SLEME Regimental Centre, Malay Street, Colombo 2.
Major General Jayasooriya who joined the Sri Lanka Army in May 1982 as a cadet officer upon completion of his training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, joined the SLEME as a young officer.
Major General Jayasooriya with a wide knowledge on mechanical and electrical sphere has held a number of appointments as Centre Commandant at SLEME workshop, Commandant Electrical and Mechanical School, Commanding Officer Armoured Corps workshop, Base workshop at Katubedda and a number of other senior appointments before he became the Director, Directorate of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in May 2009. Soon after his promotion to the rank of Major General, he was made the Director General, for SLEME and the newest project, Army Industry, a few months ago.
Monday’s ceremony for assumption of office took place amidst Seth Pirith chanting of the Maha Sangha. To signify the acceptance of the new office, Major General Jayasooriya signed up a formal document at the auspicious minute.
A formal Guard Turnout and a Guard of Honour greeted Major General Jayasooriya upon his arrival at the SLEME Regimental Headquarters in keeping with military traditions.
