May “Sinhala &;amp; Hindu New Year - 2013” Rekindles Hopes for a Better Professionally qualified Army

Here is the full text of the New Year message, issued by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

It is with great pleasure I extend my New Year greetings to all ranks in the Army and members of their families at a time the whole of Sri Lanka celebrates the Sinhala and Hindu New Year.

Sinhala and Hindu New Year as a special national festival that symbolizes cooperation and unity among all ethnicities, is celebrated this year too on a grand scale. You all must be determined to overcome all the current challenges in order to achieve our targets since the country, through hard-earned peace, is fast moving towards an era of mammoth development at this moment of our nation.

Sri Lanka Army, extending its overwhelming commitment towards the national development performs commendable roles although a warfare-oriented Army found it rather difficult to be transformed itself to be a peacetime force. Accordingly, we are very pleased with the progress the Army has made in the past four years.

Plans are already afoot in the organization with the objective of producing a full-fledged professional soldier in the future Army. As I believe, you will be able to reap the dividends of this planned improvement of professionalism and various welfare measures as members of the Army.

At this auspicious festive period, I recall the memories and invaluable services of our fallen War Heroes with dignity and honour. Let me also wish speedy recovery to all injured War Heroes, still recovering and take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to all War Hero families. Likewise, my New Year greetings go to all members of the civil staff serving the Army and their family members. Let me wish all of you a prosperous, peaceful and happy New Year!
