Jaffna's 51 Division Headquarters Welcomes Secretary Defence

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, currently in Jaffna in connection with a spate of military and government-initiated inaugural development projects, took time off on Wednesday (13) morning to call at the 51 Division Headquarters in the heart of Jaffna, now a fully fledged Army formation, housed in a state land.

Accompanied by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, the visiting Secretary Defence and Urban Development for the first time in Kopay - centred Division’s history visited this security establishment in order to see for himself how the entire complex has been re-designed with new durable pre-fabricated structures.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, during the inspection tour of the camp site was highly impressed and wanted this complex to serve a model to follow since technicalities used for this construction provide the troops with more spacious and comfortable facilities unlike before.

Prior to Mr Rajapaksa’s visit to the 51 Division complex today (13), Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army recently ceremonially opened this newly-refurbished formation which enabled the troops to vacate Jaffna’s famous ‘Gnanam’ and ‘Subash’ hotels a few years ago after handing them over to their owners.

During his stay in the complex, Mr Rajapaksa took special care to inspect the soldiers’ new accommodation billets, mess facilities and other structural developments, still under construction.

General Officer Commanding, 51 Division and senior officers warmly received the visiting Defence Secretary and the Commander of the Army.
