Army Enters Wastepaper Recycling Industry with SVAB Support

A waste paper re-cycling factory, erected at Pangolla 5 Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) Ironside camp, as one more project of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) for re-use of waste paper in the Army, was opened on Friday (07) morning.

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB gracing the occasion as Chief Guest inaugurated the project after cutting a ribbon and formally handed it over to the soldiers who are expected to run the project.

The project, the brainchild of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, became a reality as a new SVAB project under the able guidance of Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya and was actively supported and directed by Prof Richard Perera, an expert in the field of recycling and reproduction.

The SVAB spent Rs 2.5 million towards this novel project, through which wastepaper in the island-wide Army installations could be recycled and reused as new processed paper for various official requirements in the Army. A few tons of wastepaper in the Army are set aside on a daily basis after use and those stocks are to collected systematically before being subjected to recycling under this project.

Randeniya-Pinnawala based Maximus Paper Recycling Factory readily offered its generous technical know-how for training of Sri Lanka Armoured Corps soldiers for this project. Once the project gets fully operational, the factory expects to absorb as many as 100 kgs per day for recycling. It also expects to collect wastepaper stocks from all other state agencies for recycling in the future.

Prof Richard Perera, the guiding light behind the project made a brief presentation during today’s (7) inauguration and explained how the Army would be benefited cost-wise by this project with the full implementation of the project.

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya alongside Prof Perera and several other invitees had a close look on the recycling process after ceremonial opening of the project. Provided the project turns profitable in the long run, the SVAB expects to use generated income to support numerous Ranaviru welfare activities, being effected by the SVAB.

Mrs Jayasuriya and other distinguished guests on arrival at the site were welcomed by children of Ranaviru families.
