The Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) commemorated their fallen War Heroes at its Ambepussa Headquaters on Saturday (6), giving pride of place to next of kin and children of SLSR War Heroes.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army attended the occasion as the Chief Guest on the invitation of Major General D.R.A.B. Jayathilake, Colonel of the Sinha Regiment. The event, organized for the 21st consecutive year, paid floral tributes to the SLSR memorial at the premises and transferred merits to 143 officers and 3719 other rankers who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the country’s territorial integrity.
The Army Commander was welcomed by the Regimental Commander of the Sinha Regiment on arrival.
It followed the floral tribute to the SLSR Monument in commemoration of SLSR War Heroes. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs. Jayasuriya placed floral wreaths and paid their tribute to those fallen martyrs as next of kin and children of the departed afterwards placed wreaths and lit lamps in their memory. Senior Officers, officers and others followed suit.
Afterwards Lieutenant General Jayasuriya addressing the gathering said that they would have ended the war earlier had we received the exemplary and determined leadership of HE the President and the Secretary Defence years ago. He stressed that it was due to the determination and the leadership of HE the President and the Secretary Defence that the war was won.
The Army Commander also shared a couple of views with the family members of the War Heroes present.
Retired Senior SLSR Officers Major General (Retd) Jaliya Nammuni, Major General (Retd) W.A.A. de Silva, Major General (Retd) Sanath Karunarathne, Major General (Retd) S.V. Panabokka, Brigadier (Retd) T.R.T. Jayathunge, Brigadier (Retd) A.B. Wijekoon, Brigadier (Retd) Kandaragama, Brigadier (Retd) Salay and Colonel D.V. Hapuarachchi were also present at the occasion.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) later on distributed scholarships among children of War Hero families. The Commander interacted with those present on the occasion and shared a couple of thoughts with them.
