Pooneryn Civilians Given 1500 Free Spectacles thru SFHQ-MLT & 66 Division

An initiative of the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaitivu (SFHQ-MLT) with 66 Infantry Division Headquarters taking the lead on Saturday (12) saw a few more than 1500 needy civilians with vision impairment received reading glasses free of charge following the sponsorship, lent by overseas-based expatriate, Mrs Lucky Gunathilaka of ‘Nethsarana’ Australia Foundation to Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaitivu.

The community-oriented programme that coincided with the commemoration of fallen war heroes in the Pooneryn debacle before May 2009 examined those low-income group families for their eye ailments before award of those spectacles and necessary medicine. During the same arrangement at Pooneryn Central College, the day’s Chief Guest with the 66 Division, General Officer Commanding and Senior Officers awarded 10 sets of library books for distribution among 10 school libraries in remote areas in Pooneryn.

The eligible beneficiaries for receipt of spectacles were chosen after eye clinics held under the total supervision of the General Officer Commanding of the 66 Infantry Division selected the deserving civilians.
