The active support and coordination of 11 Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment troops of the 543 Brigade of the 54 Division of the Security Force HQ-Wanni which paved the way for Dr Sanoj Fernando, District Medical Officer, Talaimannar Divisional Hospital to initiate a 'Green Garden' (organic cultivation) inside the Talaimannar Divisional Hospital compound several months ago, enabled the Medical Staff to collect their first harvest of vegetables and yams on Tuesday (18).
The project that kicked off to be in line with the Commander’s concept for promotion of Green Agriculture and Food Security, was launched at the request of the District Medical Officer after the proposal was conveyed to him by Brigadier Thushara Harasgama, 543 Brigade whose troops also contributed in the preparation of the soil and planting.
The bountiful harvest of winged beans, long beans, ground nuts, brinjal, lady fingers, leeks, manioc, etc that were grown inside the hospital compound was thus harvested and given to Dr Sanoj Fernando who in return delivered the stock to the hospital kitchen for consumption of patients receiving treatment. Brigadier Thushara Harasgama attended the harvesting occasion as the Chief Guest.
