The Army troops' quick stacking of sandbags along the banks of the Kelani river in the general area of Bomiriya village in Kaduwela prevented a major flood catastrophe and the timely evacuation of civilians from vulnerable areas saved the lives when torrential rains caused a spill of river waters during 5-6 September.
2 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment troops of the Security Force Headquarters-West promptly acted and placed hundreds of sandbags on both sides of the river banks amid heavy downpours in order to prevent the overflowing of the banks in the general 471 Grama Seva Division of Bomiriya village.
Those operations were carried out under the directions of Major General Deepal Pussella, Commander, Security Forces -West in coordination with Brigadier Roshan Jayammanna, General Officer Commanding of the 14 Division and Brigadier Vindana Kodhithuwakku, Brigade Commander of the 144 Brigade. Troops of the 2(V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry, quickly conducted those relief and rescue operations.
