General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army was the first to extend best wishes and congratulations to Army winners in the National Super League Volleyball Championship - 2021 who won the National championship for the first time at the indoor stadium of the Youth Services Council in Maharagama on Saturday (13).
Beating their Air Force rivals, Army woman players recorded a 3-1 victory emerging as national Champions for the first time in the Army history.
Although both Army and Air Force women's teams were qualified for the finals in the year 2018, woman volleyball players of the Air Force won the crown after a close tussle. This year's preliminary series of this tournament were held at Dadella volleyball house in Galle and a total of 50 Sports Clubs vied for supremacy in the tournament.
In the Women’s semi-finals, Air Force Sports Club (SC) defeated Navy SC 25-20, 25-22, 20-25, 25-1 while the Army SC had 25-14, 21-25, 32-20, 25-23 over players of Hidaramani. The winners received Rs 150,000 in cash and awards for the most outstanding players. The runners up, Air Force women were awarded Rs 100,000 in cash.
Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) on hearing of the victory conveyed her compliments and best wishes.
