Army Troops Apprehend Illegal Sand Mining Equipment from Several Places

Troops of 6 Gajaba Regiment (GR) of the 233 Brigade under the 23 Division of the Security Force HQ - East, together with Policemen on Thursday (4) afternoon arrested a stock of illegal sand mining equipment at Jayanthiyaya.

To be in line with HE the President’s directions, General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army directed the island-wide troops to actively support apprehension of antisocial elements, drug dealers, smugglers, illegal tree-fellers, environmental damages, criminals, etc with a view to eradicating illegal activities from the country.

At Jayanthiyaya, troops took 2 tractors and several heavy equipment, used for sand mining into custody and handed them over to the Valachchenai Police station for further investigations.

Meanwhile, troops of the 11 GR serving under the 663 Brigade of the 66 Division of the Security Force HQ-Kilinochchi apprehended another stock of illegal sand mining equipment from Ambalaperumalkulam last afternoon (4).

Troops during this operation took two tractors and several digging equipment into custody.

Meanwhile, troops of 14 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment of the 641 Brigade under the 64 Division of the Security Force HQ - Mullaittivu nabbed another stock of illegal sand mining equipment from Wasanthipuram last afternoon (4).
