The inauguration of the Photo Exhibition of Army Sports for the second day and award of appreciative mementos to a section of past sportsmen and coaches, to be in parallel with Thursday’s (12) ‘Colours Night - 2014’, occurred this morning (11) at the BMICH during a ceremony.
General R. De S. Daluwatte (Retd), former Commander of the Army attended the event as the Chief Guest for the opening of the exhibition. On arrival at the venue, the Chief Guest was welcomed by Deputy Chief of Staff Major General E. M. M Ambanpola.
The ceremony commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp. In addition to the Chief Guest, veteran coach, Mr Yogananda Wijesundara, Chairperson, National Netball Committee, Ms Victoria Lakshmi, Chairman, National Badminton Committee, Mr Suraj Randeniya, Director General Sports, Major General R. Rathnasingham, Chief Organizer of the Photo Exhibition, Major General Renuka Udawatte and Director Sports, Brigadier Athula Galagamage also joined the tradition of lighting the lamp.
Later on, a total of 160 sportsmen and women, including chairmen / chairpersons, committee members, coaches and a section of veterans were felicitated and honoured in a separate ceremony at the BMICH a few minutes later after awarding special plaques and a souvenir book as gestures of recognition of their contribution to the field of Army sports.
Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Adjutant General and a host of Senior Officers were present at the ceremonies.
