New 'Reception Hall' Project for Army Personnel in Colombo Inaugurated

Fulfilling a long-due need for Army personnel and their family members, a five-storey ‘Reception Hall’ that could accommodate social gatherings, is to be built in Colombo on a suggestion, mooted by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake by the initiatives of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU).

The auspicious foundation-laying ceremony at the premises in Maitland Place, Colombo 7 took place Saturday (31) morning, headed by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, ASVU in the company of several senior officers.

The absence of a common reception hall for conduct of weddings, social events, conferences and seminars of Army personnel in the Western Province remained a much-needed requirement since reservations of such places in Colombo was comparatively costly for Army personnel.

Following observations to this effect were made, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake initiated the project which is to be made a reality with the support of the troops in 6 Engineers Service Regiment of the Army.

Saturday’s ceremony saw Mrs Ratnayake undertaking the project as one of the ASVU’s, laid the foundation stone, amid Pirith chanting of members of the Maha Sangha. The estimated cost for the construction is Rs 800 m and the architectural plan, has been designed by Major Rajitha Nanayakkara of Engineer Service Regiment.

This state-of-the-art five-storeyed building with capacity for more than 700 guests at a time is to be equipped with modern furniture, glassware, decorations, etc and a huge dining hall plus a kitchen of high standards. The hall is to be made available to Army personnel for social functions at concessionary rate.

ASVU senior officers were also present at today’s inaugural ceremony.
