Wanni Commander Pledges All Assistance for Arrest of Illicit Tree Fellers &;amp; Sand Miners

An urgent meeting, comprised of more than 50 state officials, including Divisional Secretaries, senior Police officers, Police Officers In Charge, Wildlife Officials, Assistant Wildlife Rangers and Grama Seva Officials serving the Wanni region, was held a few days ago at the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) for the sole purpose of protecting Wanni jungles and arresting illicit sand miners and tree fellers.

The meeting, convened by Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, SFHQ-W on the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, discussed the measures that should be taken against those errant elements and the importance of protecting the existing jungle patches in the Wanni region.

It was revealed that President Mahinda Rajapaksa on being informed that continuing illicit tree-felling and sand mining in the Wanni region, has directed the SFHQ-W to immediately arrest the wilful environmental destruction after launching an extensive network for this purpose, following the complaints received by the Presidential Secretariat.

During the meeting Major General Perera advised all officials present to nab those engaged in such destructive practices, taking prompt actions and produce them before Court, enabling law enforcement authorities to file lawsuits against such wrong-doers.

The meeting was also reminded that the Army in coordination with all relevant parties, is all the time prepared to give its assistance despite day and night in the arrest of such criminal elements since preservation of our environment is a national commitment.
