The first ever military funeral of Recruit Ajantha Prasad of 7 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps took place at Kilinochchi Thirumurukkandy Public Cemetery recently with full military honours.
The recruit, a native of Kilinochchi who joined the Sri Lanka Army as a woman soldier on May 22 has been suddenly diagnosed having a cancer after she took ill and was transferred to Jaffna Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Recruit Ajantha, the 5th of a family of six members completed her primary education at Thirumurukkandy Hindu Vidyalaya and was living in Selvapuram, Thirumurukkandy with her family members.
Unaware of her terminal disease, she had joined the Army and was undergoing basic training at the time of her untimely demise.
Her military funeral with full honours on Aug 15, attended by senior officers and other ranks, attracted a mammoth crowd, in addition to her close relatives since it was the first ever military funeral to have taken place in Kilinochchi in the living memory.
