Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W), responding to the urgent requirement of water and dry-rations for drought-hit civilians in the Wanni, made various arrangements for supply of reliefs with the support of Army water bowsers and many donors in the past couple of days.
Troops of the 62 Division on the directions of Brigadier K.G.D Perera, General Officer Commanding, 62 Division, recently, gave away 200 rice packs, each containing 10 kgs to more than 200 families.
Mr Yoga Perera, President, SLADA has sponsored the donation of those dry-rations at the request of the SFHQ-W. Mr Mahesh Gammanpila and Mr Rishwa Farook of the SLADA participated in the donation on behalf of Mr Yoga Perera.
Meanwhile, more than 228 families at Bogaswewa I & II, Namalgama, Selalihinigama and Nandimithragama were given dry-ration packets by a team of Buddhist monks who visited those villages.
Ven. Hettimulle Siddhartha Nayaka Thero, Ven. Kehelpandala Chandraloka Thero, Ven. Muthuthankulame Vimalajothi Thero and a few monks have organized those dry-ration packs, considering the hardships of those affected civilians.
General Officer Commanding, 56 Division, Brigadier D.A.R Ranawaka, senior officers and village representatives took part in the programme.
In the meantime, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, heeding the request of the SFHQ-W for assistance donated 16 water tanks and a stock of storage cans, together with dispatch of several water bowsers.
Those relief packs were distributed among worst-affected civilians in Mawathawewa, Aliyakada, Maradanmaduwa and several other areas.
Representatives of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, SFHQ-W senior officers, Divisional Secretary for Horowpothana and a large number of civilians attended the occasion.
Meanwhile, a group of social service activists, led by Mr M.P Senevirathne, Chairman, USRI Engineering Company, donated a large stock of dry rations for distribution among drought-affected civilians in Welioya areas.
Similarly, the same group made a cash donation for welfare of two disable children, K.A Asith (16) and K.A Harsha (13) of the same family of Nikawewa south, Welioya, considering their nature of disability.
Each dry ration packet, contained 10 kg of rice, dhal (1 kg), potatoes (1 kg), big onions (1 kg), sugar (1 kg), salt (1 kg), tea, chillie powder, curry powder, coconuts, coconut oil, etc. The distribution was coordinated by 621 Brigade and 9 (v) Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops.
In another development, following patronage extended by Rev. Father Kelum in Padaviya church, steps were taken to distribute 750 water bottles of 5 liter among drought-affected families in Herath Hallmillewa, Bellankadawala, Thammannawa and Punchi Mudagama areas. 62 Division organized the distribution.
