'Mihindu Seth Medura' War Heroes Qualify in IWMS Elocution Exams, organized by SLASC Ladies


Award of certificates to 21 Attidiya Mihindu Seth Medura resident differently-able inmates who had excelled in the Examinations, conducted by the Institute of Western Music and Speech (IWMS), took place at the Mihindu Seth Medura, Attidiya on Wednesday (6).

Mrs. Damayanthi Rathnayake, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) attended as the Chief Guest for the certificate-awarding ceremony, organized by the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) Seva Vanitha Unit at the request of the SLASC Seva Vanitha Unit chairperson.

This worthy project, initiated by Mrs. Gimhani Nanayakkarawasam, Treasurer, SLASC Seva Vanitha Unit, was the first of its kind in a wellness resort, supported and implemented with the directions of Mrs. Vathany Ratnasigham, Chairperson, SLASC Seva Vanitha Unit.

Together with the Chief Guest, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, Mrs Sepali Samarasinghe, ASVU Vice President and Chairperson, Sri Lanka Army Signal Corps (SLSC) Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Vathany Ratnasigham, Chairperson, SLASC Seva Vanitha Unit and Mrs. Maureen Silva, Chairperson, IWMS, were also present during this event.

Mrs Vijayee Perera, a qualified teacher of the IWMS, commenced elocution classes at Mihindu Seth Medura in October 2013 with the assistance of Ms Ranmini Senanayake and Ms Manoji Naotunna.

Following a request made by Mrs. Vijayee Perera, IWMS office-bearers exempted the inmates from fees and conducted the IWMS examinations free of charge for the candidates in the Mihindu Seth Medura as a gesture of gratitude and appreciation to all these heroes who sacrificed their legs and limbs for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

IWMS Examiners, taking an exceptional stand conducted the ‘Elocution Initial Grade Written Examination’ and ‘Elocution Initial Grade Practical Examination’ on 22 May 2014 at Mihindu Seth Medura, although they generally hold such examinations at identified locations in various provinces in Sri Lanka.

Organizers thanked Mihindu Seth Medura management for all coordinating work which enabled the IWMS staff to conduct such courses in the premises. Major General Ravi Ratnasingham, Colonel Commandant, SLASC and other senior offices of the SLASC, threw their weight behind the implementation and subsequent success of the project.

The IWMS office bearers, Mrs. Maureen Silva, Mrs. Sandya Coomasaru, Directress, Exam Unit, Mrs. Geetha Wadage, Secretary expressed their views and told the gathering that they were extremely fortune to have been able to visit the Mihindu Seth Medura to conduct the examination, both practical and written and also the possibility that facilitated them to attend the final certificate awarding ceremony as special invitees.

Performances of the Sri Lanka Army Band, inmates at Mihindu Seth Medura, Major Thilina Chandra Kumara and Corporal Saumya Lepothdeniya, added variety to this event and showcased their aesthetic talents.

This project is to be continued, enabling the inmates to face next levels of the IWMS examinations in the future.
