Joint Operation Rescues Over 40 Tourists


More than 40 local and foreign tourists who were trapped in the Minneriya National Park, due to the overflowing of the Kiri Oya reservoir were rescued by a joint operation carried out by the Army, Police and the jeep owners of the area. A spokesman for the Jeep Owners Association in Minneriya said the trapped persons were rescued by using ropes. The rescue operation lasted for nearly four hours. It was reported that the water level in the park was around 8 feet.

In was also reported there were two Ukrainian and two British nationals together with 28 local tourists marooned in the park as a result of the floods.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre said the members of the security forces who were specially trained for handling disaster situations were kept on alert for any emergency situation as a result of the adverse weather conditions prevailing in the country. (Courtesy :- Daily Mirror)
