General Rashad Mahmood, NI (M), Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), Pakistan, now on tour in Sri Lanka, paid a courtesy call on the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake on Wednesday (9) morning at Army Headquarters.
Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Adjutant General, received the visiting CJCSC, Pakistan upon arrival at the Army Headquarters and ushered him to the entrance of the Commander’s Office where the visiting military chief was introduced to the principal staff officers.
A Guard of Honour at the Ministry of Defence grounds adjoining the Army Headquarters premises presented arms and saluted the visiting Pakistan military chief in accordance with military traditions.
Major General Crishantha de Silva, Chief of Staff, Major General E.P. De Z Abeysekara, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General L.B.R Mark, Master General Ordnance, Major General R.V Udawatta, Director General Financial Management and Major General Amal Karunasekara, Military Secretary were among senior Army officers associated with the welcome accorded to the visiting military chief.
During the cordial meeting that ensued, both General Rashad Mahmood and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake shared views on several current issues that are relevant to the region and both Army organizations.
Lieutenant General Ratnayake thankfully recalled how Pakistan Army has right throughout been assisting the Sri Lanka Army in the training of its officers.
Towards the end of the courtesy meeting, both of them exchanged mementos.
As the second leg of the day’s itinerary, General Mahmood was to pay courtesy calls on Commanders of the Navy and Air Force Wednesday (9) morning.
A brief lecture to the student officers by the visiting Pakistan’s military chief at Sapugaskanda Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) culminates his day’s itinerary for the third consecutive day of his visit.
On Thursday (10) he will fly to Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) at Diyatalawa and meet senior officers there in order to learn more about the academic aspect of the SLMA and its different training programmes.
During his stay, he is scheduled to visit Jaffna, Anuradhapura and a few other places in Colombo.
General Rashad Mahmood, NI (M) was commissioned in an Infantry Regiment in 1975. He is a graduate of Canadian Forces Command and Staff College and National Defence University Islamabad. He holds a Masters Degree in War Studies from National Defence University Islamabad.
His Staff assignments include Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Deputy Assistant Personal Secretary to Chief of the Army Staff, Military Secretary to the President of Pakistan and Chief of Staff in a Corps Headquarters. He remained on the faculty of Pakistan Military Academy, School of Infantry and Tactics, Command & Staff College Quetta and National Defence University Islamabad.
He has commanded two Infantry Regiments, two Infantry Brigades and also has the honour of commanding a multinational United Nations Brigade in Democratic Republic of Congo. The General Officer has commanded an Infantry Division and has also served as Director General Counter Terrorism at Directorate General Inter Services Intelligence. As Lieutenant General, he commanded Corps at Lahore and also served as Chief of the General Staff of Pakistan Army.
On 27 November 2013, he was promoted to the rank of General and appointed Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. He is married and has a son and daughter.
